Spider-man swinging through buildings

Spider-Man is the first film version of Peter Parker’s origin story in the 21st Century, which tells how Peter (Toby Magiure) becomes Spider-Man and what he does with his  newfound powers. Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) is Peter Parker’s next-door neighbor and love interest. On a school field trip to Oscorp with Mary Jane, his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco), and other classmates,  Peter is bitten by a genetically-engineered spider. He feels sick and goes to bed.

What happens to Uncle Ben?

When he wakes up, he discovers that he has gained more defined muscles and does not need to wear glasses anymore. Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) and Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) think he is acting weird after his field trip to Oscorp. While dropping him off at the library, Uncle Benhas a talk with Peter and says the famous line “With great power comes great responsibility.” Peter ends up going to a wrestling match to test his powers and wins. When picking up Peter from the library, Uncle Ben is killed trying to stop a robber and car thief. After graduating high school Peter, Harry, and Mary Jane move to the city. Peter begins work as a photographer for the Daily Bugle, and Harry and Mary Jane start to date.

How does Norman Osborn become the Green Goblin?

Back at Oscorp, Norman Osborn, Harry’s father, conducts a  human enhancement experiment on himself and turns into the Green Goblin. The government wants to take away Oscorp’s funding, so he uses his Green Goblin technology to blow up his competition and any officials attempting to stand in his way.

The next day, he wakes up with no memory of the event. Norman heads to work, where he discovers that the Oscorp Board sold Oscorp without his approval and expect him to resign as CEO. At a parade that is put on by Oscorp, the Green Goblin attacks and kills the board. Mary Jane is at the event and almost falls to her death; however, Spider-Man saves her, and she becomes intrigued by the mystery hero.

Does Spider-Man join the Green Goblin?

Green Goblin finds Spider-Man and tries to get Spider-Man to join him, but Spider-Man refuses him. Soon after their meeting, Mary Jane is attacked by thugs and Spider-Man saves the day again. This results in Mary Jane kissing Peter as Spider-Man, still unaware of his true identity.

Mary Jane, Aunt May, Harry, Norman, and Peter come together for Thanksgiving dinner, where Norman finds out that Peter is Spider-Man. He uses this information by going after Peter’s loved ones; the Green Goblin attacks Aunt May and sends her to the hospital. Then Mary Jane is taken by the Green Goblin and put on a bridge, where Spider-Man manages to simultaneously stop the Green Goblin from killing both a trolley full of children and Mary Jane. They continue to fight and the Green Goblin ends up killing himself when Spider-Man defends an attack. Spider-Man takes Norman’s body back to his mansion, where Harry finds Spider-Man placing the body on a couch.

At Norman’s funeral, Harry blames Spider-Man for the death of his father and vows that he will have his revenge. Mary Jane confesses her love for Peter, but he rejects her and says he will only be her friend. He realizes that being together would put Mary Jane at risk, and he decides that being Spider-Man and protecting the city needs to take priority.

What can we learn from Spider-Man?

Spider-Man has power and a responsibility to use it wisely. Like Spider-Man, when we are given authority over others, such as in a parental role or at work, we need to be responsible with the actions we take. Those actions affect more than just ourselves and can cause a negative effect on others, potentially for years to come.
