Mail in ballots and masks

Every two years, we have elections across the United States. In Florida, the election for the new President of the United States and Governor of Florida alternate every two years. In addition, we also have to select other candidates, such as national and state representatives or congresspersons, judges, school board members, constitutional amendments, and others.

Sometimes when we hear about politics, we get anxious, especially around voting time. In 2022, we are voting for President of the United States — this year especially has a multitude of reasons that have caused anxiety to grow. These include recovering from Covid-19 pandemic which resulted in a recession that hit every industry and many lost their jobs and benefits. The pandemic caused necessary isolation from one another and resulted in anxiety over how to cover basic necessities of life. This coupled with the political things we hear and see on a daily basis has caused a rise of anxiety overall, and voting is not the first thing on our minds. Voting could even be something we want to avoid.

Who Decides on Laws and Polices in America?

Voting may not seem important, but it decides the direction of the country for the next four years. The President steers the course of the country with their vision of America over the next four years, just at the Governor for each state. Each candidate shares their position on many subjects including the economy, social issues, government, domestic policy, foreign policy, and national security. Domestic issues include education, environmental issues, gun control, health care, immigration, border security, and technology. There are many things to consider when voting for a candidate. With all these issues we can get overwhelmed and cause more anxiety.

What I Can Do About Voting Anxiety?

To help combat the anxiety that voting may cause, we can prepare for it. This can be done by looking at candidates websites, reviewing their voting records, and understanding what each candidate stands for. We can also decide what issues are most important to us individually and see which candidate’s record and position most align to our own views. Another method to employ  is choosing our choices beforehand  on a sample ballot and taking it with us to the polls. Breathing exercises or meditation are another way to relieve anxiety while in the voting booth.

Who Should I Vote For?

There are many ways to help with anxiety that comes with voting in 2022. The path to overcoming voting anxiety will vary from person to person, but can be done one step at a time. I encourage you to either vote by mail/vote early or on election day for the candidates and constitutional amendments that personally align with your individual beliefs or values.
