In a small seaside town in Maine, Atlanna, the queen of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, is rescued by Thomas Curry, a lighthouse keeper, during a storm. The two fall in love and have a son named Arthur. They live together as a family for years until Atlantean soldiers come to retrieve Atlanna. Atlanna is forced to return to Atlantis and is later executed for loving a human and having Arthur. Arthur grows up under the guidance of his mother’s advisor, Nuidis Vulko, but he decides to reject Atlantis completely for their treatment of his mother.
Years later, an adult Arthur acts as a guardian of the sea. He uses his abilities to protect his town; in one instance, he takes down a ship overrun by pirates. During the altercation, he kills the leader of the group. This causes the leader’s son, David, to swear vengeance against Arthur.
The Call to Atlantis
Meanwhile, Orm Marius, King of Atlantis and Arthur’s half-brother, is attempting to unite the kingdoms of the ocean in order to attack the surface world in retribution for polluting the oceans. If Orm unites all four kingdoms, he will become the Ocean Master. This would make him the commander of the most powerful force on the planet. Orm’s fiance, Mera, is against his plan and decides to go to the surface to try and convince Arthur to come take the throne.
Mera and Vulko manage to convince Arthur to look for the Trident of Atlan, a magic artifact that belonged to Atlantis’ first ruler; if he finds it, it will allow him to reclaim the throne. Mera and Arthur discover a number of clues that eventually lead them to Sicily, where they find out the trident’s location.
Orm teams up with David, and he provides him with an Atlantean battle suit to kill Arthur. David dons the costume and calls himself “Black Manta”, then heads to Sicily to confront Mera and Arthur. Although heavily wounded, Arthur manages to fend David off and continues on to the location of the trident, which ends up being a wormhole that transports them to an uncharted sea at the center of the Earth. He discovers that his mother is alive and has been living here for the past 20 years.
Accepting Destiny
Arthur then faces off against a monster guarding the trident and proves himself worthy of the throne. He uses the trident to face off against Orm and defeats him. When the Atlanteans see that Arthur holds the trident, they immediately accept him as their one true king. By the end of the film, Arthur’s parents are reunited, and he has embraced this new role as king. “My father was a lighthouse keeper. My mother was a queen. They were never meant to meet, but their love saved the world. They made me what I am. A son of the land, a king of the seas. I am the protector of the deep. I am Aquaman.”
Arthur is prompted on a journey of self-discovery. Although he wants to fight his heritage, he is a natural in the ocean and a born leader. However, he has to find this out for himself. The trials he faces and conquers in his path to find the trident show him that his destiny is to unite and lead. Similarly, we will only find out our purpose in life if we seek out opportunities and take chances, instead of just waiting for life to happen to us.
