Guardians of the Galaxy starts out on Earth, where we see Peter Quail listening to late 70s rock music at a hospital speaking to his mother for the last time. After seeing his mother pass away he runs away and gets abducted by a spaceship.
Fast Forward 26 years, a couple of years after the events of The Avengers begin, Peter is on a planet that is basically destroyed and finds a metal orb (the Infinity Power stone). The Kree come looking for the Orb in order to give it to Thanos, but Peter gets away with the Orb and goes to Xander, home of the Nova Corps, to sell it. A bounty of $40,000 units is put on his head, and our other soon-to-be Guardians,l Gamora, Groot, and Rocket, go after Peter, otherwise known as Star-Lord. During their fight, they all get captured and sent to a maximum security prison. They meet our last Guardian, Drax the Destroyer, there and decide to work together to escape the prison and sell the Orb for $4 billion units. They escape and go to Knowhere, a floating Celestial head, where Gamora explains that Thanos took her from her planet and destroyed her world. Drax and Groot get in a fight, and Star-Lord has to break it up.

The members in the Guardians of the Galaxy want to destroy each other even though they have a common purpose, which is selfishly-motivated for each of them in a different way.
When our actions are done for selfish reasons, they tend to eventually end in disaster. We can choose what we want to do, but we cannot usually choose the consequences for those actions. As a result, those actions can have a positive or negative effect on ourselves or another person. We each can decide to act in a way that affects ourselves and the world in a positive way.
Ronan the Accuser, Nebula, and their forces end up on Knowhere to find the Orb after Drax calls Ronan to fight him to the death while the other Guardians are busy. Ronan and Drax fight, but Drax is no match for Ronan and is nearly killed. Nebula goes after Rocket, Gamora, and Star-Lord, who are in mining shuttles and eventually obtains the Orb. Quill and Gamora end up in space and barely alive, but get captured by Yando and the Ravagers.
Rocket, Drax, and Groot meet together to discuss their next move. Drax explains that he has lived with all the anger from losing his family, and all the rage was to cover his loss. As a result of their shared experiences and bonding, Drax, Groot, and Racket become real teammates. They decide to go get Gamora and Quill from the Ravagers, but find out Gamora and Quill have struck a deal with Yando and want to join them.

Gamora wants to take down Ronan because Ronan wants to destroy the billions of people living on Xander.
The group decides to be altruistic and save Xander with help of the Ravagers. Gamora states that, “I have lived most of my life surrounded by my enemies. I would be grateful to die surrounded by my friends”.. Drax says that “You are an honorable man, Quill. I will fight beside you. And in the end, see my wife and daughter again”. These changes reflected in Drax and Gamora especially signify what the group has done for each individually.
The Ravagers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Kree make it to Xander and a battle commences. All of the Guardians of the Galaxy, except Rocket, board the Kree ship to stop Ronan; the group is met by Nebula and hundreds of other Kree soldiers. They defeat Nebula and the Kree soldiers, making it to the bridge. On the bridge, they send a rocket at Ronan that seems to kill Ronan, but he survives. Rocket then decides to crash his ship through the bridge window and hits Ronan. As a result, the Kree ship is headed to land and will crash. Groot protects everyone by wrapping them in a ball and says, “We are Groot.”
The Kree ship crashes and lands in the capital city of Xander; the Guardians survive thanks to Groot, but unfortunately so does Ronan. Ronan gives a victory speech, but Quill starts singing and dancing to distract Ronan, while Rocket crafts a laser gun from the wreckage to blow up Ronan’s hammer. Drax uses the gun to blow up the hammer, and Quill grabs the Power Stone before Ronan can. The Guardians join hands to take on the power of the stone, and they use that power to destroy Ronan the Accuser. They put the Power Stone into a new metal orb and give it to the Nova Corp for safekeeping. Groot turns into Baby Groot, and Quill finds out he is half Terran (from Earth) and half of something else that is ancient (Celestial).
We can be like the Guardians of the Galaxy by working together for a good cause.
The Guardians of the Galaxy banned together and nearly gave their lives in order to save a planet that wanted to put them in prison for life. Our good cause does not have to be as great as what the Guardians experienced. We can do small things, like use reusable products instead of single use products, volunteer at a homeless or pet shelter, plant a tree, or some other service project in order to give back and generate positive effects in the world.
