The main events of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 happen a couple of months after the Guardians of the Galaxy save the planet of Xander from Ronan the Accuser. The movie first takes us to 1980 in Missouri, where Peter Quill’s parents met and fell madly in love. During their date, Martha Quill acknowledges that she has fallen in love with a spaceman.

We are taken back to the present, specifically  the planet called the Sovereign, where Golden High Priestess Ayesha has asked the Guardians to guard batteries from an interdimensional being feeding on them. They battle and kill the interdimensional being and obtain Nebula as a reward. They head back to Xander to turn Nebula in for the reward money.

Quill has developed feelings for Gamora and talks with Drax about them. Drax states that, “You just need to find a woman who is pathetic, like you.” As they were leaving Sovereign, the Sovereign navy comes after them because Rocket stole some batteries; as a result, they are forced to jump to a planet called Berhert. A spaceship following them in the jump also lands on Berhert; a man comes out of the ship and identifies himself as Ego, the father of Peter Quill.

Peter Quill finally learns who his father is after wanting to know his whole life; he can finally discover a part of himself that he believes is missing.

The movie moves to show Yando on a snow planet where Stakar Ogord kicks him out of the Ravagers for trafficking children (like he had been when he first picked up Quill). Yando is then hired by Ayesha to find the Guardians. The movie cuts back to the Guardians and Ego at a campfire; Ego states that he wants them to come to his home world so that he can explain Quill’s heritage and get to know him better. Drax, and Gamora accompany Quill and board Ego’s ship headed to Ego’s home world. On the ship, they talk to Mantis, who tells them about her powers as an empath.

They land on Ego’s planet, which is beautiful, and Ego reveals that he is a Celestial. He wanted to have an equal and experience life with other species, including what it was like to be human. Ego said that his human experience resulted in him meeting and falling in love with Peter’s mother, but he left after Martha got pregnant. Ego goes on and reveals that this planet is part of him and that Quill also has Celestial powers, showing him how to  make a blue electric baseball.

Meanwhile, Rocket, Groot, and Yando have teamed up and taken over the Ravager ship; they head to the planet Ego with over 700 jumps. Quill makes a move on Gamora, and they talk and slow dance. They talk about their feelings, and Gamora states she doesn’t feel good about the planet or Quill’s father. They get into a fight, and Gamora walks away from him. Nebula lands on Ego’s planet, finds Gamora and tries to kill her; however, they end up in a cave. Afterwards, they form a truce and begin to explore the cave in order to learn more about Ego.

Gamora and Nebula have a heart to heart talk and become real sisters for the first time; when they finally stopped fighting and began to talk, they were able to put aside their differences and work together.

Ego and Quill further discuss how they have the power to create anything they want with the blue light. Ego reveals that he wanted to find meaning, and he found that through finding Quill. Ego calls his purpose the expansion, which he has done by planting a piece of himself on thousands of planets. He wants everything in the universe to become him, but it can only be done with the power of two Celestials. Ego reveals that this is the true reason he impregnated Quill’s mother and tells him that he is the one who put a tumor in her brain, resulting in her death. Then, Ego turns Quill into a battery for his personal use. The Guardians decide to save Quill and destroy Ego by destroying his brain at the center of the planet.

They get to the planet core, and the Sovereign navy shows up and destroys their ship. Rocket and Groot make an atomic bomb and head to the center of the planet to deliver the bomb. The Sovereign navy is subsequently destroyed by lasers, and Mantis is knocked unconscious. They are all trapped by Ego, and Ego uses Quill as a battery again. However, Quill is able to snap out of it and then uses his newfound power to fight Ego while everyone else gathers to another ship, and the atomic bomb is set off in Ego’s brain. Ego is destroyed, and Yando dies saving Quill. Gamora then reveals that she loves Quill.

Sometimes, like Quill, we do not know who our relatives are, and after finding them they may not turn out to be who we thought they might be. We may have had a fantasy about how things could be once reunited and are disappointed when faced with the reality of our family situation. Quill was happy to find his father, but he found out his father is not a good person. When this happens, we have the choice to find people that treat and love us like a real family. Quill found his family in the other Guardians and Yando. A loving family to support us is something that will help us progress in life.
