Man of Steel serves as both an introduction to Clark Kent and the beginning of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). After Krypton’s destruction is proven inevitable, Jor-El and Lara-El decide to save their infant son Kal-El, the first naturally born Kryptonian child in centuries, by sending him in a spacecraft to Earth. He is found and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. Raised as Clark Kent, he learns how to master his powers while pretending to be human. When he is unable to use his powers to save Jonathan, he decides to take off on his own to seek out a purpose for his life.

Who Is Clark Kent?

When a Kryptonian ship is discovered in Canada, Clark seeks it out. There he finds a uniform bearing his family crest, and he learns about his history from an living AI built into the ship. While there, he also meets and ends up saving Lois Lane, a reporter for the Daily Planet. Lois initially wants to publish a story about Clark and his abilities, but she ultimately agrees to keep his secret

Soon after this event, a group of exiled Kryptonians led by General Zod escapes from the Phantom Zone and arrives on Earth. Zod demands that Kal-El surrender himself or subject the world to war. Clark and Lois go to the U.S. military and agree to surrender themselves to Zod together. Zod then reveals his plan to use Clark’s DNA to power a “World Engine”. This will turn Earth into a new Krypton, killing humanity in the process.

Clark and Lois manage to escape, resulting in an epic fight between Clark and Zod throughout Metropolis. Clark destroys the World Engine and opens a portal to the Phantom Zone, trapping Zod’s army and sending them back into this space prison. Zod vows revenge and attempts to heat vision a nearby family, and Clark is forced to kill him.

Balancing Superman and Life

In the aftermath of the battle, Clark has earned the trust of the military and begins to go by the name Superman. He decides to choose a daytime career that will allow him access to dangerous situations – a reporter. He soon joins Lois at the Daily Planet, kicking off the Superman dual-identity we’ve all come to know.

This film shows us Superman as a struggling human. Clark isn’t sure what to do with his life, and he doubts himself. Even with all of his powers, he has a lack of purpose in his life. However, he actively decides to do something about it. Like Clark, we may be feeling unsure of our future, especially nowadays due to COVID. We can take control of this situation by actively pursuing whatever it is that will provide us a fulfilling, happy life.
