Approximately eight months after Avengers: Endgame, Nick Fury and Maria Hill go to Mexico to investigate the damage caused by a supernatural event and are met by Quentin Beck (Mysterio). Back in the United States, Peter Parker tells his best friend Ned that he likes their mutual friend M.J. and has a plan to tell M.J. on their summer school trip.
Peter is looking forward to a break from always being the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” and just being a normal teen.
Peter gets a call from Fury about the event in Mexico, but Peter ignores him. Happy, Tony Stark’s former bodyguard, comes to talk with Peter. Peter does not waver and refuses to help. On the plane ride to Europe, Peter’s first step in his process to tell M.J. get demolished by another classmate, Brad Davis, who also likes M.J. and sits next to her on the plane. Ned sits next to Betty Brant, and they become boyfriend and girlfriend for the entire summer trip.
The class starts their trip in Venice, Italy, and Peter buys a black dahlia necklace for M.J. M.J. finds Peter, and they start walking together. A Water Elemental then attacks Venice. Mysterio shows up and saves the day with some assistance from Peter. Fury meets with Peter, Hill, and Mysterio and asks Peter to help them destroy the other two Elementals. Peter tries to talk his way out of the situation. Fury says, “You have to choose if you’re going to step up. Stark made you an Avenger and I need that. The world needs that. But you gotta make that choice.” Peter walks away from the group after receiving the E.D.I.T.H. glasses as an inheritance from Stark; the glasses give him access to Stark’s database and weaponry.
After Peter refuses them, Fury hijacks the summer class trip. While the class is headed toward Prague on a bus, they stop at a rest stop where Peter is directed to a different area by the bus driver. In the room Peter enters, he finds a female S.H.I.E.L.D agent, offers him a new black costume. She tells him to try on the costume. As Peter is changing, Davis walks in and takes a picture of him. Davis believes Peter is hooking up with a European chick and plans to show M.J. Peter uses E.D.I.T.H to erase the photo on Davis’s phone.
Peter learns self-sacrifice and the importance of helping others when he would rather be doing something else.
While in Prague, Peter agrees to join Fury and Mysterio to stop the Fire Elemental, while the rest of his class is safely at an opera. M.J., Ned, and Betty leave the opera and see Night Monkey (Spider-Man in the new all-black disguise) and Mysterio fight and beat the Fire Elemental. Later, Peter and Mysterio go to a bar and they talk about the pressures of being a hero. Peter gives the E.D.I.T.H. glasses to Mysterio and leaves to find M.J. Mysterio then reveals who he really is ‒ a disgruntled and mad former employee of Tony Stark. Mysterio plans to kill Peter and his friends and use the E.D.I.T.H. technology to become the next Avenger.
M.J. and Peter meet on a bridge, and M.J. reveals that she knows he is Spider-Man. She tells Peter she found a projector wrapped in a web after his battle with the Fire Elemental. They both find out that Mysterio was lying all along. Mysterio poses as Fury using advanced virtual reality technology and pulls up in a car to trick Peter. Using the VR technology, Mysterio tries to convince Peter to believe the illusion. However, Peter figures out the truth, and they fight.
Peter learns to believe in himself and what he is truly capable of.
We do not know what we are capable of until we try. We might be scared or avoid action because of our fear of failure; on the other hand, we may also fear success and would rather stay in our comfort zone instead of dealing with change. The only way to grow is to get out of our comfort zone.
Peter calls Happy, who flies over, picks him up, and takes him to London. Peter makes a new suit in the airplane using Stark’s technology. Mysterio uses drones and VR technology to create a super Elemental that has the powers of all of the previous Elementals: earth, fire, water, and wind. Spider-Man uses his Spidey senses to stop Mysterio, who dies after being shot by one of his own droids.
M.J. runs after Spider-Man on the London Bridge Tower, and they reveal they like each other and kiss. They get home and hold hands. Happy and Aunt May state that they had a summer fling. The movie ends with J. Jonah Jamesson revealing Peter’s identity via a secret recording that Mysterio sent before he died.
