Thor: Dark World happens after the events of The Avengers. The movie starts with Odin describing the Aether (Reality Stone) and the Dark Elves, who want to turn the universe back to darkness. The Aether is an ancient force of infinite destruction capable of wiping out an entire universe. Odin’s father, Bor, led the Asgardians in battle to defeat the Dark Elves  and they buried the Aether deep where no one could find it; however, some of the elves survived and swore to eventually seek vengeance.

The movie returns to the present, where Loki is on trial before Odin for his crimes on Earth. Meanwhile, Thor is trying to bring peace to the nine realms after the recent reconstruction of the Bifröst,  which had been destroyed 2 years prior. Odin tells Thor to focus on what is a hand, which in his mind is Thor becoming king and marrying Lady Sif, his longtime friend and ally.

Thor is unhappy even though he has a lot of success and people who love him on Asgard.

Back on Earth, Jane goes on a date in London, England but cannot focus or open up to her date because of her feelings for Thor. Darcy interrupts Jane’s date with information about strange signals similar to those they received when Thor first came two years ago, and they leave together to find a zero gravity anomaly in a warehouse. Jane gets sucked into one of the portals and accidentally finds the Aether, which attaches to her body; she is stuck in the portal for five hours. While she is in the portal, Heimdall alerts Thor that he has lost sight of her, as Thor had been regularly asking him to check in on Jane and confirm her well-being. Thor goes to Earth to find that Jane has returned with a lot of energy in her, so he takes her back to Asgard for a check-up.

Thor is happy to be reunited with the person he loves the most and wants to be his mate.

Jane is also happy for the first time in a while. Like Thor and Jane, we can find happiness in life when we are with a person who loves and respects us as an equal partner. In a relationship, it is important to have give and take between partners, as well as maintain personal boundaries so that neither person feels used.

The Dark Elves, including their leader Malekith, awaken from a deep sleep as a result of Jane’s interaction with the Aether, and they begin their plan to use it to turn the universe into an eternal darkness. One of Malekith’s closest advisers, Algrim, is turned into Kurse, a Dark Elf super soldier, for a limited time; he allows himself to be captured during a battle on a different realm and lands himself in the Asgardian prison. Kurse breaks free from prison and lets all of the other prisoners loose, except for Loki. The Dark Elves bring their spaceship and go to war with the Asgardians to obtain the Aether. Frigga, Thor’s mother, dies trying to protect Jane  from Malekith and Kurse. Thor shows up, but Malekith and Kruse manage to get away on one of their spaceships.

Thor is happy for a brief moment, but soon loses his mother.

Like Thor we will go through good times, hard times, sad times, and happy times throughout our lifetime. Some of these events can devastate and break us down to the point where we do not want to go on. During those times, we have to remember the good times we experienced and set realistic goals for the future. By doing this, we can start the journey to having peace of mind and peace in our heart.

Thor decides to free Loki and move Jane against his father’s orders. Odin orders his forces to capture Thor. Thor, Loki, and Jane are able to escape from Asgard. Malekith and Kurse find the Aether and take it from Jane. In the process of destroying Kurse, Loki is killed.

The movie returns to Earth, where Dr. Selvig appears to be instructing a class on the convergence of all the planets (realms) and his invention to avoid the catastrophe when the planets move in between each other. As it turns out, he is actually in a mental institution due to the trauma he suffered from Loki’s attack during the events of The Avengers. Darcy frees Dr. Selvig, who predicts the convergence is happening on Earth. When Thor and Jane come back to Earth, they meet Darcy and Dr. Selvig, who explains the importance of the upcoming Convergence to them, and Thor realizes that this alignment of the planets will allow the Dark Elves to use the Convergence to release the Aether on every planet. Thor fights Malekith, who has the Aether power, and manages to defeat him.

Thor leaves Earth and promises Jane he will return after he talks with Odin about what happened to Loki and on Earth. Thor asks for his life and tells his father that he cannot be king, but will protect Asgard and the Nine realms with his life.

Thor knows his limits and creates boundaries for himself, outlining for others what he will and will not do.

Healthy boundaries should exist in all of the different aspects of our lives, including: physical boundaries, intellectual boundaries, emotional boundaries, sexual boundaries, and material boundaries. By instituting these boundaries, we can create great self-worth and self-respect in our own lives. It can be beneficial if we first decide what our personal boundaries are, then decide what our boundaries are in relationships.

Thor decides he does not want to be king of Asgard and instead wants to go and seek out his own path in life. Thor leaves his father, and it is revealed that Odin is actually Loki in disguise, who then takes the throne.
