This episode of WandaVision begins in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1693, where Agatha is on trial. However, Agatha is on trial by humans, but rather by her fellow witches who discovered her use of black magic. Agatha absorbs the magic of the entire coven, killing them, and flies off. Despite her history and centuries of magic, she still has no idea how Wanda created the Hex in Westview. As Wanda herself doesn’t seem to know what happened, Agatha decides to take them on a literal walkthrough of the most traumatic moments in Wanda’s life.

She begins with a moment first described by Pietro during Avengers: Age of Ultron. Wanda’s family is enjoying TV night, during which they practice English while watching classic American sitcoms. A bomb goes off, destroying their apartment building and killing Wanda’s parents. Wanda and Pietro lay under a bed trapped next to another bomb, which we know never goes off. However, the memory reveals that Wanda used a spell to stop the bomb. Her powers began before her interaction with the Mind Stone.

They move on to another memory – Wanda is in a HYDRA lab, and she is prompted to touch Loki’s Scepter. As she walks toward it, the stone approaches her and bursts into blinding light, revealing an image of the Scarlet Witch to Wanda. This memory is more useful to Agatha, who now has a theory about Wanda’s abilities.

Wanda and Agatha jump to a memory from in the Avengers facility. Wanda is reeling from the loss of her brother and adjusting to her new surroundings. Vision joins her for an episode of Malcolm in the Middle, and he prompts Wanda to talk about her feelings. She describes her deep sadness, and Vision shares that he has never experienced loss because he’s never had a loved one to lose. “But what is grief,” he muses, “if not love persevering.”

The Scarlet Witch Rises

The final memory reveals what happened when Wanda visited S.W.O.R.D. to find Vision’s body. Wanda demands Vision’s body back so that she can give him a proper funeral. While Director Haywood allows her to see Vision’s body, he informs her that they will not be putting a multi-billion dollar weapon in the ground. Although she is engaged by their disrespect for Vision’s corpse, she accepts that he is gone and leaves. She drives to Westview and makes her way to an empty plot of land that she and Vision purchased together. In a moment of extreme grief, Wanda releases an explosion of energy that builds their house and creates the Hex, as well as her own version of Vision.

With this, Agatha declares that Wanda is a myth and shouldn’t exist. Agatha identifies the magic that created Westview as Chaos Magic and calls Wanda the Scarlet Witch for the first time in the MCU. If you stick around for the post-credit scene, you’ll also see Director Haywood use energy from the Hex to reanimate Vision’s body.
