Are you Introvert?

If I were to ask you to imagine the personality of an introvert, how would you envision them? Do you imagine a quiet and shy person who absolutely hates being around other people? Have you always held the misconception that introverts have no friends and don’t have the ability to forge new relationships? Well, you may be surprised to learn that introverts are not always the shy and quiet person you are picturing who hates being surrounded by other people. An introvert can be bubbly and outgoing. I know, it sounds absurd, doesn’t it? It’s the truth, though!

Introverts are people who feel the most energized and recharged when they are alone. However, this does not necessarily mean that they hate being around people. Introverts can be that bubbly, outgoing person in your Algebra class, but you just don’t know it. An introvert simply needs to find time to spend some time alone so that they can recharge their batteries; then, they can be whomever they naturally are in public ‒ whether that be the social butterfly or a shy and quiet person.

So, is it possible that you have believed yourself an extroverted person all of your life, only to find out that you are actually an introvert? I mean, it is possible! As I said before, you can be a social butterfly and also be an introvert. Let me ask you: do you feel drained after spending some time surrounded by people? Do you feel reenergized and ready to take on the world after spending some time being alone? Do you find yourself feeling uninspired when you haven’t made the time to be by yourself?

Are you Extroverted?

Now, what do you picture when asked, “what is an extrovert?” Do you picture a social butterfly? Do you picture the class clown? Maybe even the queen bee? Well, that could be the case, or it could be the complete opposite. Just like introverts, extroverts come in all shapes, sizes, and personality types. There really is no “one-size fits all” definition for being an introvert or an extrovert.

An extrovert is a person who gets their energy from being around other people. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that an extrovert is someone with a large amount of friends. Somebody who has a few friends but finds themselves feeling more energetic when surrounded by them could also be considered an extrovert!

Now that you have read about the differences between an introvert and an extrovert, have you changed your mind about which category you fall under? Did you believe that you were an introvert because you have a small group of friends, only to realize you feel most energetic when surrounded by them? Does being surrounded by your best friends feel like a form of self-care to you?

So, you have introverts and you have extroverts. The terms were both coined by Carl Jung. Although Jung coined the terms, he also held the belief that there was a third personality type that actually fits a majority of people. This personality type is called an ambivert, which is someone who finds themselves falling a little bit under both the introverted and extroverted personality types. So which one do you believe you are: an introvert, an extrovert, or an ambivert?
